Planning Permission for Bifold Doors

Aluminium Bifolding Doors will often form part of a larger extension in the home as well as being used to replace older French doors or Patio doors.  If it is the case that your bifolding doors will be part of a building project, the chances are that you will be required to seek planning permission.

bifolding doors

Bifolding doors such as these Origin aluminium doors now form a key component of home extensions and planning considerations.

Whether you are building an extension on the back of the home or self-building a new home with aluminium bifolding doors as well as windows, planning permission will be needed.

What to Consider When Seeking Planning Permission for Bifold Doors

Location

The choice of your location when self building as well as the sort of extension you are planning to build is a key consideration.  This is where planners take into account many factors such as whether the property falls outside the Boundary set by the council as one example.

Consider your neighbours

It is important that you consider the effect your extension or self build project will have on your neighbours.  Whilst it is true that the impact on neighbouring properties will be considered by the planning authorities, any objection will have to show that the proposed development will have an adverse effect.  So you will have to consider the location, the impact on your neighbour’s light along with the size of the building.

As far as bifolding doors and windows are concerned you will need to be aware if these overlook your next door neighbours gardens or whether their light may by blocked out.  Other factors to consider will be how your new extension may affect them. Communication with the neighbours is key.

With many terraced properties now being extended it is wise to consider the impact of these extensions on the neighbouring properties.

Conservation Areas and Listed Buildings.

Where new extensions are being planned in conservation areas you will definitely have to work closely with the Planning Department where it is likely they will wish to see good design and in keeping with the existing property.  Homeowners will often have considerably more work to do when planning extensions and alterations to properties in conservation areas, however this one of the responsibilities that comes with owning such a property intended to be preserved.

Timescales and Procedures

It is normally the case that applications for extensions should be resolved in a matter of weeks and the outcome of your application should be reasonably prompt.  There will obviously be delays if there are any objections to the proposed build, therefore it is recommended that you do your research and communicate with the local authority in advance so you are aware of what their expectations will be of you and so that you can put in place the application correctly.  This will save a lot of time and hassle.

There will be various official forms to be completed in making the planning application with typical costs ranging from about £400.  Some local authorities are consulting on plans to start charing for pre-planning advice.

When do I need Planning Permission?

A new property will definitely need planning permission as will any proposals to divide an existing building.  Extensions and alterations will be governed by rules on Permitted Development and the meeting of other set criteria. The Government in 2013 announced changes to make it easier for homeowners to create larger extensions to their properties without requiring planning permission.

This change proposes changes to existing permitted development rights and increasing the size limits of single storey extensions to dwellings to 8metres for detached properties and 6 metres for other dwellings in the rear of the property only. No application for planning permission would need to be made under these size changes in general terms.

With the huge increase in home extensions in recent years and showing no sign of receding, bifolding doors in new builds and home extensions are now very popular in Britain.  Contact us if you would like help with your bifolding doors in a building project.

Bi Fold Doors – What They Mean To The Consumer

Home improvement products have changed a lot in recent years, giving customers a wide choice.  The aluminium windows and doors available today are slimmer, more thermally efficient and highly secure.  And that’s before the customer chooses a colour.  Aluminium doors, windows and bi fold doors are available in more that one colour, but then you already knew that.

A room with Bi Fold Doors

Bi fold doors do more than sliding patio or French doors in improving views from the inside out and letting maximum light in.

As the products have changed, so has the buying customer.  Historically it was the norm that the customer would purchase what the sales rep was offering or recommending.  Very often the visiting salesperson was their only source of information.  The way that double glazing is sold has changed.  Aside from the information available online, more emphasis is now given to creating showrooms that display aluminium windows and doors in a way that demonstrates their main selling points.

Bi fold Doors

The bifolding door is one of the most popular home improvement products at the moment.  Reports published by industry and market analysts confirm this.  These reports say that some sectors of home improvements, such as the traditional conservatory have seen a decline sales.  However sales of bifolding doors continue their upward trend.

Bifolding doors form a focal point of every quality double glazing showroom.  There are very few home improvement companies that do not offer some version of a bifolding door, whether in aluminium, pvcu or timber.

The installation of bi fold doors is widely acknowledged as not just adding monetary value to a property but creating an enhanced living space internally and adding a connection to the outside space.

Is a bifolding door just a door ?

In the spring of 2013 Origin Doors commissioned their own survey into how people felt about their homes and importantly their views from it.

2000 people were surveyed and asked various questions about their view into their gardens and the importance of the outside space and light.  The health, property and lifestyle benefits of the garden, and the view of the garden, were reported.  In addition to this people commented on the added value that their gardens brought to how they enjoy their homes generally.

Consumer surveys are also an important sales tools.

Any company specialising in aluminium bifolding doors must make its customer base aware of the value that those doors can bring to a home.  Without wishing to sound too corny, these companies are not just in the business of supplying bifolding doors, but are helping their customers make a lifestyle choice.

With a bifolding door there are clearly benefits that a simple window doesn’t bring.  Bi fold doors open fully creating a wide open space. Along with the large glass panels letting in maximum light they help create a seamless transition from the outside.  No simple window, French door or patio door can achieve the same effect.

This research from Origin Doors demonstrates that the British clearly have a love affair with their homes and their gardens. It is evidence that even when the weather prevents us enjoying the outdoors, products like aluminium bifolding doors can enhance our views and significantly improve our homes and gardens.

A customer may desire a bifolding door but if they have reservations about the price difference between a sliding patio door and a bifolding door surveys like this can help them reach a decision.

No doubt many customers will resonate with the findings of the Origin survey and agree that outside space and views from the home matter to them.  Hopefully it will help them decide to let a sophisticated yet easy to use door like a bifolding door enhance their property.

What is best? PVCu, Timber Or Aluminium Bifolding Doors?

$

In choosing new bifolding doors, consumers will have a choice of four possible materials, Aluminium, PVCu (also referred to as uPVC) timber or the latest in Hybrid materials which largely consists of wood inside and aluminium outside.

room with aluminium bifolding doors

Every material has its place in the market, budget and other factors determine the choice

It is true that each provider of bifolding doors will promote the advantages of their own particular material.  There is no good or bad product, but each type of material has design, cost and other factors and no two doors will be exactly the same.  Whether you choose aluminium bifolding doors, a PVCu or timber bifolding door, the systems companies that design these products will ensure they meet the relevant industry standards.

Taking security as one example, all will use high security locks and will meet British, European or even Secured by Design Standards.  Similarly, some doors will be available and designed with more sophisticated locks or a greater number of locking points and are arguably more secure.

PVCu Bifolding Doors.

These are acknowledged as being at the cheaper end of the bifolding door market owing to the simple rationale that plastic is cheaper than aluminium or wood both to produce and manufacture.  This is therefore reflected in the cost of the product with PVCu bifolding doors largely chosen by those on a budget.

PVCu by its very nature is weaker than aluminium or timber and any quality PVCu bifolding door will have the core of the pvcu profile reinforced by aluminium or steel. It is this reinforcement that gives plastic doors their integrity and strength.  If the particular product is not reinforced it will in most cases consist of “multi-chambered” profiles. All the screws, rivets and fixings used to hold hinges, locks, handles or other accessories in place are reliant upon this reinforcing or multi chambered profile to grip onto and provide a secure fixing for the hardware – critical in ensuring doors are reliable in their operation.

The one disadvantage PVCu bifolding doors have over other materials is that PVCu is a weak material therefore to have the strength will need to be a large profile. Consequently, the sight lines of PVCu bifolding doors are thicker which results in less visible glass.   Whilst there are now slimmer pvcu bifolding doors coming onto the market, generally the sight lines are much thicker.

PVCu bifolding doors are also at a disadvantage when it comes to the design of the hardware. The hinges on the majority of PVCu doors are much thicker and arguably more unsightly than those found on timber or aluminium doors as PVCu doors need thicker and bigger hardware to ensure proper function.  Technology is moving ahead on these also with some more discreet hardware on certain systems.

Some Typical PVCu BIfolding Doors Aluminium Bifolding Doors enjoy slim sight lines Aluminium Bifolding Door Mitre Joints Typical PVCu Mitre Joint

Another factor with PVCu bifolding doors is that the plastic profile is prone to much more thermal expansion than aluminium.  PVCu bifolding doors will be prone to changes in temperature and this could affect the operation of doors located most of the day in direct sunlight.

Timber Bifolding Doors

Timber bifolding doors remain at the top end of the market and essentially they remain quality joinery. The natural appeal of wood cannot be questioned and in certain buildings only the timber product will do.  Maintenance was once an issue with timber bifolds, however modern treatment methods mean that there are long guarantees available on timber products and correctly maintained  timber bifolding doors should give years of good service. Paints are also now subject to long guarantees unlike before.  Wood will also be subject to thermal movement but the avoidance of water penetration on timber bifolds is very important and only ensured by regular checks on the product and immediate repair in the event of any damage to the external paint finish.

The appeal of timber is there for those who wish to see the varnished or painted finish of wood, the quality craftsmanship and above all, the natural material.  Hardware choices are diverse and timber bifolding doors remain quality crafted joinery.

Timber bifolding doors will be much heavier than their pvcu or aluminium counterparts and as such, the correct installation and adjustment of bifolding doors, like any other, is critical to ensure long term reliable operation.

Sight lines vary from system to system with timber bifolding doors. There are some very slim systems available in the marketplace as low as 70mm with some systems.  Timber bifolding doors like aluminium or pvcu are available in double or triple glazed forms.  Sizes of door leaves are diverse with the structural integrity of wood enabling the manufacture of wide and tall bifolding doors in excess of the capabilities of PVCu.

Whilst the natural appeal of wood is an advantage, the current prices of timber bifolding doors are far above those of pvcu and aluminium.

Aluminium Bifolding Doors

It is fair to say that the aluminium bifolding door remains the most popular product.  It is true that many window companies that specialise in PVCu windows and doors will only offer an aluminium bifolding door as they are aware of the possible limitation of the system and the long term reliability of the product. Reliability of products is critical with the door and window industry.  Reputable companies that offer long term guarantees on windows and doors must have confidence that the product will be reliable in the longer term and costly guarantee or service work kept to a minimum.

As with the other materials, there is a diverse range of aluminium bifolding doors available.  Aluminium brings several advantages over PVCu and timber in being an ultra low maintenance product, has slim sight lines owing to the inherent strength of aluminium.  Aluminium bifolding doors can be manufactured taller than their PVCu counterparts.  Additionally there is a choice of frame profiles with aluminium bifolding doors available in square and profiled frame and sash options.

Hybrid Bifolding Doors

Hybrid doors whilst an expensive and heavy product are ideal for those that wish to enjoy the natural wood inside and all the advantages of aluminium outside.  The internal profiles are sourced from sustainable timber and available in either natural untreated forms or in a wide variety of stains and colours.  Externally the door is all aluminium offering the long weather performance, wide colour choice and slim aesthetics that aluminium offers on doors.  They are not the cheapest product however for those that are looking for something different, they are idea. Some more information on Hybrid Windows and Doors is available here.

Colour Choices

Yellow Origin Doors

The Origin Bifolding Door has a wide range of bold colours available from stock.

All materials are available in a wide choice of colours.  The PVCu bifold is available in a range of colours including foiled wood grain finishes.  Aluminium doors have by far the widest range of colours available including wood effects.

The wood effect on aluminium bifolding doors is part of the paint process and not a foil.  The advantage of this over PVCu is that should the profile be damaged it can be repaired easier than a PVCu door which will expose the bare white or brown profile beneath the foil.

With aluminium doors the coloured finish is regarded as of a higher paint quality owing to the sophisticated powder coating processes used in colouring aluminium.  It is also available with specific guarantees to suit specific environments such as swimming pools, coastal, salty or severe weather.

Timber doors are valuable in many stains and varnishes as well as colours from many colour swatches.  Farrow and Ball and other paints can be called off if needed.

Schuco Systems have announced a major improvement to their AvanTec range of Simply Smart window fittings in the latest update to their range of Schuco Aluminium Windows.

Schuco Bi Folding Doors

Schuco Systems have introduced an advanced and innovative range of hardware to appeal to customers, architects and manufacturers

The German company is internationally renowned for going further than most when it comes to their window hardware, engineering and design.  Many systems companies look to the wider hardware market for gearing and window handles to suit their range of products. Schuco on the other hand design their own range of locking systems and handles and ensure every component of their aluminium windows are branded throughout with the Schuco name.

The Avantec SimplySmart range of window fittings.

The range of alumnium windows Schuco designs are very advanced in their function and features compared to many aluminium systems. Alongside standard casement windows they also offer a wide range of specialist products for specific architecturally designed applications.

Windows are available as outward or inward opening, tilt and turn, bottom hung opening in and side hung.  They are also available in more complex double vent arrangements where there is both an internal opening in window and an external opening out window within one window construction.   There are also windows designed for easy access acting as both windows and doors.

This new range of hardware enables 180 degree opening vents, generally unavailable in many other systems, completely concealed fixings and for large windows the ability to carry opening window weights of up to 250kg.  The hardware also meets severe exposure ratings meaning it is suitable for coastal or extreme applications.

For the end user, there is also the ability if required to add additional locking points to the window even after it has been installed.  Again this is not available in any of the mainstream aluminium window products.

Schuco Fabricators and Installers can also benefit from this new range of hardware and handles.

For those that fabricate Schuco windows, previous versions of the Avantec hardware will be available until 2016.  This enables existing contracts with a long build time on site such as major construction work to be fulfilled and completed with the existing range of hardware.

Cleverly, Schuco will also make spare parts for the previous suite of hardware available for a further 10 years.  This service level is generally unheard of with other aluminium systems whereby the window industry once parts are no longer available recommends that new windows are fitted even though there is nothing wrong with the profiles of the window itself.

The new range of handles and locks brings many new features for the architect in the specification of aluminium windows but also are designed to reduce fabrication time for the manufacturer.  There is now less machining and preparation of aluminium extrusions and more clip-fit componentry in fabrication eliminating the need for screws.

The assembly of the windows has been made easier with a flexible fabrication sequence designed to reduce fabrication errors and automatic positioning features which greatly aids accuracy in window assembly as well as saving fabrication time.

Schuco aluminium windows are arguably the most engineered and diverse available in the market today. They are suitable for both residential homes and commercial buildings alike, and the new Aventec SimplySmart range ensures that they remain market leaders.

Should a door have a hold open closer or a non-hold open closer?

Aluminium Commercial doors are often required to perform an emergency exit function to commercial and public buildings.  Where fire exit doors are required, they will be fitted with either push to exit panic bars (also referred to as crash bars) or push to exit paddle handles.

commercial door with hold open device

Many commercial buildings are fitted with fire exit doors. What is the correct closer to use?

Door closers form an integral part of commercial door hardware to fire exit doors.  Normally fitted as concealed overhead door closers or face fixed closers, they perform the function of controlling the closing action and closing speed of the aluminium door.

Door closer selection will largely depend upon the size of the door leaf in question, the weight of the glass and the force of the closer to meet current regulations under the Equality Act 2010.  These door closers will also need to be specified as either hold open or non hold open.

What is a hold open and non hold open closer?

A non hold-open closer does not keep the door open. Once it is opened past the 110 degree point it will commence the closing action of the door.  A non hold open closer is designed to hold the door open when the door is opened past 110 degrees. Simple pushing of the door towards the closed position, activates the closer and it also commences the closing action of the door.

Do aluminium fire exit doors require hold open or non hold open closers?

There is no hard and fast rule regarding whether a hold open or non hold open closer is required to fire exit doors. The correct type of closer will largely depend upon the intended function of these doors.  Some aluminium commercial doors that are purely emergency exit doors may remain shut for long periods of time until an emergency escape situation occurs.  Other doors designated as fire exits may still be used by users as entry and exit doors.

A hold open closer may be suitable where a building has a large number of users and the doors will be required to stay open in an emergency escape situation.

In buildings where the doors are used as entry and exit doors consideration should be given whether these doors are required to latch shut every time.  The non hold open closer will ensure that the door leaf closes every time, therefore in these situations, the use of a non hold open closer may be preferable.

Hold open and non hold open closers are not just for emergency exit doors.

apartment block with commercial doors

In apartment buildings where security is key, a non hold open closer may be preferable to ensure the door latches shut every time.

Many aluminium commercial doors are used in apartment buildings fitted with an electric release or access control system so residents can gain entry into a building.  Security is the key consideration with these types of doors and in most cases to keep the building secure, they will be required to latch shut every time.  These types of doors should be specified with non hold open closers.

Other types of commercial doors may serve many other functions. Some shops like to leave their doors held open during opening hours.  Other doors may be used used to move items in and out of buildings.  Where the doors are regularly required to be kept open for any length of time, hold open closers are ideal.

The correct door closer will largely depend upon the function of the door and how the building is used.  Should a building come under new ownership or the function of the doors need to change, the door closers can easily be changed from hold open to non hold open and vice versa

Colour Matching Powder Coated Aluminium Windows to other products.

$

Specifying powder coated aluminium windows is normally a straightforward process.  The aluminium window and door specialists already supply a standard range of powder coated colours with any special colours being ordered using specific powder coated references.

Crittall Replacement Windows

There is no guarantee that a new powder coated crittall replacement window will match the existing painted steel windows.

Where the requirement is to colour match existing window products, external finishes or cladding or simply obtain a match to something that is already there, there is no guarantee that an exact match can be achieved for a number of factors.

Different Paint Processes, achieve different results.

If for example, you are trying to colour match an existing powder coated steel window. The process involved in powder coating steel is different and can therefore produce different results.

One example is the curing process in the ovens after the aluminium and steel have been powder coated.  Steel may require a different temperature and a different curing time and if it is not carried out correctly there can be differences between the finish on a powder coated aluminium window when trying to match it to a powder coated or painted steel window.

Our earlier which <href=”http: www.aluminiumtradesupply.co.uk=”" 9889=”" colour-matching-powder-coated-aluminium-windows=”" “=”">explains how sometimes the same RAL reference can result in colour discrepancies, pays specific reference to powder manufacturers.  When trying to match to an existing coloured window, often it is impossible to know where this window was powder coated, with what make of powder and with what process.  Similarly a wet paint process will not achieve an exact match to a powder coating process.

Unless we know exactly how the existing product was finished, by whom and with what process, it may be possible to achieve a similar colour match that most will be happy with, but rarely an exact match.

We have a responsibility to make customers aware of any factors that may result in colour matching not being possible because unless the window company is aware of all the facts and the customer is also aware of the reasons, it can avoid disputes in the future.

The same processes will achieve the best results.

Aluminium panels are one good example where there may not be an exact colour match.

Aluminium panels are one good example where there may not be an exact colour match.

If you are a window company that specialises in powder coated aluminium windows it is recommended that any ancillary items are powder coated by the same applicator.  This is particularly the case for products such as aluminium panels or aluminium trickle vents.  Unless all these items are painted in the same make of powder or by the same applicator it is unlikely there will be an exact match.

Practically this is not always possible as systems companies will often paint their aluminium bars and specialist manufacturers and suppliers will provide panels.  It is wise to establish what makes of powders are used by each supplier and seek a suitable solution.  We can advise you further.

Trickle vents will often be ordered from the supplier in the RAL reference, however if they are finished abroad or have a different paint process applied, even if the same RAL reference is specified, there is no guarantee of an exact colour match.  These same aluminium trickle vents will often have plastic end caps. Plastic is not polyester powder coated and differences in colour may be visible.  This is not the fault of the product but if the customer is aware of this beforehand it may avoid awkward situations where the customer complains about it.

A reputable window company should be aware of all these factors and make the customer aware prior to any contracts being signed.  If in doubt, always seek the advice of a reputable polyester powder coater who will be best placed to answer any questions.

Technal launches new commercial aluminium door

The commercial aluminium door has been in existence for over 30 years, widely used in applications where a reliable and heavy duty doorset is required.  Typical installations where a commercial aluminium door has proved itself over several decades are shops, schools, offices, hospitals and other high traffic buildings.

commercial aluminium door in a modern building

There has been little innovation in commercial doors in recent years. Technal have introduced the new SOLEIL aluminium door with several new features.

There has been little development in commercial doors over recent years.  Other than products now being available with a thermal break and various minor modifications to aluminium profiles, the product has largely remained unchanged.  The addition of a thermal break not only improved the thermal properties of the commercial door but also enabled these types of heavy duty aluminium doors to be available dual colour.

Many aluminium commercial doors are designed around a typical 100mm x 50mm outer frame profile, with a range of door stile, rail and hinge options to suit the vast range of hardware available.

It is the hardware for commercial doors that enables them to perform a huge range of functions whether as entrance doors, fire exit doors, access control doors or even automatic doors.

One of the reasons why commercial doors have not had the same product modification as windows is that they still largely fall outside the full requirements of Building Regulations.

Technal launches SOLEIL universal commercial aluminium door.

Technal, recently acquired by the Global SAPA Group has unveiled the SOLEIL universal door that can be regarded as a brand new type of commercial aluminium door.

This new door from Technal, designed for high traffic applications now offers excellent thermal performance compared to other commercial doors systems.  It also features a range of specification options that make for a very versatile commercial entrance door.

Technal have patented a design based around a typical 55mm deep module that creates either single action (opening in or our) or double action (opening in and out) pivot doors.  Pivot doors rely on a concealed overhead closer and threshold pivot to operate in this way.

The doors feature a new double polyamide thermal break giving excellent U Values.

With most thermal commercial doors on the market offering a single thermal break, Technal have created a crimped double thermal break of the typical polyamide material that they say achieves a 1.4W/m2K U Value.  This is excellent for a commercial door.

High security now forms an integral part of commercial aluminium doors and with the SOLEIL product, Technal meet excellent levels of security such as Class RC3 BS EN 1627-30 for Burglar Resistance.  Cleverly for those that require a better alternative to traditional key operated hook locks found in many commercial doors,  Technal are making available  an electro-magnetic system that houses its keypad within the frame. In other door systems this would normally be positioned on an adjacent wall or panel.

The new Technal SOLEIL commercial doors offers many features typical of other commercial doors with some additional innovations.

It is normally the case with other doors that should the low threshold on commercial doors need replacement, the door leaves need to be taken out of the frame.

Technal have designed a threshold that is in two parts. This can be removed for maintenance or replacement if needed without having to take the door leaves away.  It also features Document M compliance and is available as a double ramped or rebated type.

Commercial doors can accept a very wide range of after market handles such as D Handles, full height pole handles, pad handles and architectural handles.  The new Technal door will still accept these types but also offer an exclusive range of pull/push hardware exclusive to the product.

Door hinges on rebated doors are now more discreet compared to others on the market such as Dorma or hinges available with Schuco, Kawneer or Reynaers doors that can dominate the aesthetics of the product.

Glass options have been increased as well.  Typically commercial doors will take up to 28mm units. Here the Technal door can accept sealed units up to 39mm thick.

Technal say that this new commercial door product has also been subjected to millions of cycles in testing and is fully compatible with their range of framing and curtain walling systems.

It is good to see a new commercial door product after all these years which should get well specified in the commercial architectural fenestration market.

The top places for aluminium bifolding doors

Just what is the huge appeal of aluminium bifolding doors in our homes today? This popular product is desirable, hugely attractive and adds value to all properties large and small.

large room with bifold doors

Bifolding doors are fantastic for connecting inside and outside spaces. But they also have other uses too.

But did you know that bifolding doors whilst commonly and mainly used in a kitchen or lounge area to open up into the garden or outside space also have other uses?

Here are some other ways bifolding doors can be used not just in the typical home but in other dwellings and buildings as well:

Bifolding doors for Studios and Flats

You will often see folding interior doors or doors that slide into the wall in many modern small studios, one bedroom flats and apartments.  Many of these properties will also feature Juliet or small balconies.

In these types of dwellings making the most of the available space is vital and whilst doors are important in any size home, in the smaller flats they need to take up as little space as possible.

For these properties that have any kind of outside space a bifolding door will fold and concertina to provide much needed space going through them compared to French doors or patio doors.

If you are feeling even more ambitious, a bifolding door with an ultra low threshold can even be used as a room divider.  Where studio flats have no separate bedroom, bifolding doors can help.

Creatively thought out with sandblasted, satin or obscure glazing they can fold back during the daytime to give the smaller property much needed open space and closed at night to create privacy for when the space needs to be a bedroom.

Aluminium Bifolding doors in Shops, Cafes and Restaurants

Town centres have been transformed in recent years with large numbers of cafes, coffee shops and restaurants enabling people to drink and dine al fresco.  Even when situated in large shopping centres, these shops create an outside dining environment for their customers.

Aluminium bifolding doors can help create a fantastic atmosphere to any restaurant, bar or café. In the summer months the bifolding doors can be folded back to open up your shop into the street.  This will help create a welcoming attractive atmosphere that customers will want to visit.

Don’t forget that with the vast number of colours available on powder coated aluminium bifolding doors, you can colour match the doors exactly to your business colour scheme. Whether you like vibrant reds, sunshine yellows, blues or greens or even if your shop has a darker corporate theme, your doors can be a part of it.

Bifolding doors for creating more rooms in your home.

house with bifolding doors arranged in sets.

An excellent example of several sets of bifolding doors by Micron that can create rooms and one open space

The imaginative use of bifolding doors in a home can create additional rooms as well as giving you wide open spaces.  As a room divider to larger houses, when closed they still allow maximum light but privacy.  When open they allow you to make the most of the full available space.

The use of acoustic glass can give you privacy from surrounding noise if you require it. Clever use of patterned or decorative glass can also give privacy if the room requires it, or you can use tailored blinds for bifolding doors.

Bifolding doors in Industrial Buildings.

Many industrial units often require goods or machinery to be brought in from time to time. A bifolding door with the correct threshold can offer options for opening up an entire space in a more effective way than say, a large swing commercial door.

The concertina action of the bifolding door can give you a much larger opening for moving machinery, furniture, large items of stock and much more.  These items are much easier to move through a fully open space than a held open swing door.

In a similar way to room dividers, bifolding doors can be suitable if you with to have temporary private offices at some times and open up the entire office space at others.

The market for aluminium secondary double glazing will remain strong.

Aluminium Secondary Double glazing is not the first thought of many when it comes to replacement windows, but it has many advantages over typical new double glazing.

secondary double glazing in a hotel

Secondary glazing may be the ideal solution for many buildings and applications where noise control is important.

Secondary Double Glazing is a slimmer typically single glazed window system that is installed internally in the reveals of windows.  It is particularly useful for those people that simply cannot afford to replace their existing windows.

Householders who live in listed buildings (where the original windows must be retained) seeking improved insulation can benefit from secondary glazing.  Additionally, those that live in areas of high noise such as flight paths, busy town centres or near motorways can also benefit by having secondary double glazing installed.

Secondary double glazing therefore offers additional sound proofing, additional security, controls condensation and helps to retain heat in the home.  You can read more about the general benefits of aluminium secondary double glazing here.

The hotel sector is another area where secondary double glazing can be beneficial

With many hotels in city centre locations occupying older buildings, the simple replacement of existing windows may not be possible.  Here secondary double glazing can provide many benefits for residents.  With many newer hotels located near busy airports, train stations, trunk roads and motorway service stations, comfortable levels of noise for the occupiers of such buildings is important.

If a hotel customer does not have a good experience in the hotel due to noise disturbance business for that hotel can be affected as they won’t use that hotel again.

Senior Systems themselves recently reported that they have seen a rise in the number of secondary systems installed in commercial buildings and this they believe has also been the case due to changes in Building Regulations and  Codes of Practice.

There are cost savings and benefits to fitting Secondary Double Glazing to our homes.

Gatwick Airport recently reported that they would pay for double glazing to homes should they be given permission to build a second runway.  Unless this double glazing is fitted with acoustic glass that can actually help reduce sound insulation and not simply brand new windows with standard sealed units, would there be a greater benefit in actually installing secondary glazing instead?

Secondary double glazing even when installed behind recently installed new windows would offer greater sound insulation than replacement windows.  The gap between the external window and the secondary window unit would improve sound levels much more than a new window could.

Triple glazing would help somewhat and it could be argued that aesthetically, one window is better than two. That said, it would still not give the sound insulation of modern secondary double glazing.

In choosing the correct bifolding door, there are several factors to take into consideration so you can find the right door design and configuration.

The number of leaves will depend upon the size of the existing opening to take new doors or the size of the new opening you are building as part of your home extension.

Bifolding doors are available in two pane folding doors up to 6 panels or more if required.  Six panel doors are normally the most common type without using joining pieces in.

Two Panel Bifolding doors

2doorThese are ideal if you are replacing existing two pane patio doors or french doors.  A simple bifolding door solution to smaller openings, they consist of two panels that open in a sliding action in one direction.  All two pane doors will normally have what is commonly referred to as a floating mullion.  This is an additional section that is seen on the closing side of the doors.

Most bifolding door designs in the market consist of a floating mullion and this additional section will make the sight lines at the closing end of the bifolding doors appear thicker on one side than on the other.

Three panel bifolding doors

3doorThree panel bifolding doors are available in two configurations.  Doors can either all slide in one direction or you can have one door hinged as an access leaf.

If your bifolding doors will be used as regular access doors into the garden (if for example they are the only door leading outside) an access leaf is useful in that it enables you to only open one swinging leaf without having to slide all the doors back.

The master door access leaf swings back on the hinges, engages on a catch the remaining leaves slide back in the opposite direction.

Four Panel Bifolding Doors

4doorFour panel bifolding doors are generally available in three configurations:

All panels can slide back in one direction in the same way as two or three panel doors.

A popular configuration with four pane bifolding doors is the “French Door” arrangement. Either the centre two doors can open swing open and the slide back if required, or the two doors at either the left or right end can be open-end.

This combination of door opening is useful where you can still use the doors like traditional French Doors for when the weather is not that warm.  On warmer days all the leaves can be slid back.

Five Panel Bifolding Doors

5doorThree options of opening configuration are available on five pane bifolding doors.  All the leaves can be slid back.

additionally five panel bifolding doors can be manufactured with an access leaf on the one side with all the remaining leaves sliding back on the other side.  A further configuration available is three leaves sliding in one direction and two leaves sliding in another.

Six Panel Bifolding Doors

6doorThe same configuration as four panel doors is available for six panel doors but with an extra pane at each end.

Either all the leaves can slide in one direction or a combination of three sliding in one direction and three in the opposite.  The final configuration is a master or access leaf hinged on the one side and the remaining five leaves sliding together in the opposite side.

Seven Panel Bifolding Doors

7doorFour configurations are available with 7 panel bifolding doors. Four panels can slide to one side with three panels sliding on the other.  All leaves can slide in one direction if required as well.  The third configuration is the access leaf on the one side with all leaves sliding together in the opposite side.  The final configuration is five leaves sliding in one direction with two folding in the other.

Tips and Advice for Bifolding Door Blinds

Over the last few years bifold doors and large patio doors have been installed to many properties as part of refurbishment projects as well as new builds.

Bifolding door blinds are available when you don't need to block out the light but to make the room more appealing and comfortable.

Bifolding door blinds such as these transparent types are available when you don’t need to block out the light but to make the room more appealing and comfortable.

Bifolding doors are popular for living rooms, family rooms, kitchen extensions and renovations. Their ability to flood a room with natural light, offer large views into the garden provide that seamless transition between inside and outside spaces are the major reasons why they are the must have door product today.

The Bifolding Door and particularly with the slim aesthetically pleasing lines of aluminium is today one of the most desired products in any home improvement project.

There are a wide variety of bifolding doors available in the marketplace today and anyone interested in having a bifolding door fitted has the choice of many colours, styles and designs to suit any kind of property.

Now your bifolding doors are installed and the room is finished, what about shading?

Whilst you do not want to obscure the excellent view into your garden, patio, terrace or even swimming pool, there will invariably be times when you need your doors to provide you with privacy. Bespoke blinds for bifolding doors are available in many forms and provide solutions.

It is important to remember that modern bifolding doors are thermally efficient and offer very good weather performance. Therefore in choosing blinds it will not be the cold you are trying to keep out but more a case of additional privacy when you need it.

If you are fortunate to live in a property with a garden that is not overlooked, you many not find it necessary to have door blinds fitted.

But even if you don’t need privacy, it is well accepted that fabrics and textures in a room can add that feeling of warmth and cosiness. Again bifolding door blinds can help.

Whilst the building work has been carried out, it may have been difficult to visualise the finished room.  You will have dealt with all the building materials, dust and ongoing work.  Now this work is complete your room will be decorated, furnished and accessorised.

With your finished room and new bifolding doors, are you intending on leaving your bifolding doors without any form of covering? Typically modern renovations with bifolding doors are of a modern nature with natural colours, minimal clutter and an overall contemporary look, feel and theme.

Any covering you choose will need to retain the theme that not only looks good but also works with your overall decor.

There are a wide variety of bifolding door blinds available.

Fabrics and Materials

There are materials available that can completely completely obscure the light if needed and give you total privacy.

There are also materials available that perform brilliantly in reducing heat and glare through the glass but still allow a view outdoors. These types of fabrics will be particularly useful if you want to continue enjoying the excellent views your bifolding doors provide but wish to prevent too much light coming in.

Examples where these more transparent materials are useful is reducing the glare during the daytime onto a television screen or computer monitor.  If you have placed a sofa or chair directly by the doors there may be times when it may be too hot to sit by them.  Again these types of blinds and fabrics work very well.

Whatever your requirements, you will also find a diverse range of textures and fabrics that can perfectly complement the finished room and your new bifolding doors.

Fabric technology and manufacturing techniques have progressed over recent years and now there are large blinds available with minimal joints or seams as well.

Manual or Electric Blinds?

Both types of blinds have their advantages.  With manual blinds the cost is invariably lower but if they are to be used several times a day (depending on how your bifolding doors are used) you may find motorised blinds more convenient.  There is also less wear and tear on an electric motor for the long term than there is on a cord or chain operated manual blind.

If you have young children who are inquisitive and may play with manual blinds, the electric option may be more suitable.  Similarly if you are planning on renting your property out in the future (and as your property may have several tenants over time) motorised blinds may prove more reliable with different people using them.

Mains powered or Battery Operated?

Your choice of mains powered or battery operated will again depend upon your particular installation and situation.  Battery operated blinds have the advantage of not requiring additional wiring or the placement of wires.  This is useful on existing rooms where you don’t wish to have any further disruption to your finished decor.

Whatever option you choose both types offer reliable long term operation and you can programme the motors to open and close all the blinds together or individually.

The way aluminium products are being marketed is changing with companies choosing new and innovative ways to showcase architectural aluminium.

The Reynaers Hi-Finity Sliding door

The Reynaers Hi-Finity Sliding door is designed to provide maximum glass area to create stunning Glass Walls

The aluminium systems companies present in the UK today, operate from impressive factories, warehouses and offices with their premises also offering showroom and customer facilities.

However, the location of some companies may not be easy for all customers to visit and some of the leading names in architectural aluminium are now choosing additional locations in other parts of the country to make them more accessible to their prospective customers.

Reynaers Aluminium is the latest to open a new facility with the London Design Office.

Situated in one of Europe’s leading business parks designed by world class architects Foster and Partners, Reynaers Aluminium has opened its new London showroom in The Square, Stockley Park, Uxbridge.

In their new showroom Reynaers Aluminium are exhibiting their range of products. One of their leading doors is the Reynaers Hi-Finity structural glazed door system.  This allows the aluminium profiles to be recessed into the structure, giving the appearance of “glass walls” with minimal aluminium sight lines.  It is these kinds of products that are featuring prominently in the high end homes shown on television programmes like Grand Designs.

The Hi-Finity doors are available in either manual or automatic sliding operation which further adds to their appeal.

With Bifolding doors being the leading product today, Reynaers are also demonstrating their aluminium bifolding doors.

Reynaers Aluminium offer the excellent CF 77 SL slim bifolding door well known for its slim sight lines compared to other system.  This is a quality aluminium bifolding door product already widely used in quality homes throughout the country.

Other products are also  on display in the new London showroom such as window system, curtain walling, entrance doors and others.

Reynaers say:

Having such a stunning exhibition facility in-situ provides the opportunity to showcase not only the forward thinking of our design and systems capability, but also facilitates working demonstrations.

The new facility has already allowed us to host seminars and presentations to both existing and potential customers with the systems being an integral part allowing real hands-on interaction.

What the exhibition clearly demonstrates is the diverse range of systems available, the level of technical support we offer as well as the depth of testing data that we have available, all designed to help us work closely with our partners – Together for Better.

With the continued growth in aluminium products both commercially and residentially, the opening of additional showrooms around the country is one area where aluminium systems companies are widening their reach to consumers and architects.

Royal Institute of British Architects demands minimum space and light standards.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has made public a recent report carried out on their behalf by Ipsos MORI that has revealed public support for new build homes to be governed by minimum space standards.

room showing ample minimum space and light

If RIBA are successful in their new campaign for more space and light, could bifolding and patio doors see even more sales?

The research has highlighted the importance of space and natural light as the most revealed causes of present dissatisfaction with people’s homes and especially those purchased in the last 10 years. These will be reasons people will either extend their present home or consider moving home.  There is strong public support in this survey for the Government to introduce minimum space standards for new build homes.

How important is this research in relation to door and window products?

AluK are the first systems company to promote their products on the back of this new research promoting their range of bifolding and sliding door systems as solutions to offering more space and light in a property.  They say

AluK’s BSC94 and BSC70 sliding door systems offer a variety of design features such as dual colours, allowing for different colour finishes for the inside and outside, as well a complete range of hardware and accessories to help achieve the right look and performance.

AluK’s BSC94 sliding door system is a multi-configuration in-line system that features thermally enhanced extrusions. Its robust and durable design allows up to 200kg panel weight inline sliding and 400kg in a lift and slide configuration. A perfect solution for homes where there is a desire to open wide spaces to the outdoors.

Versatile and robust, AluK’s BSC70 is an in-line sliding door system with narrow profile offering minimal sight lines 42mm interlock. This competitively priced solution is available with two pane sliding door or window options and is the ideal option for traditional patio doors.

AluK 3 pane patio door AluK bifolding doors. Aluk Bifolding Doors AluK two pane patio door

Sliding and bifolding door systems are effective at achieving and exceeding a minimum space and light standard.

With RIBA promoting a website whereby the public can register their support for minimum standards in new build homes it could signal a boost for the already buoyant sliding door market if the public take this new report on board. RIBA say

The country is in the grip of the worst housing crisis in decades and there is an urgent need to provide more affordable, quality homes. In their rush to build the Government must avoid the temptation to reduce current standards and give the go-ahead for builders to produce another generation of poor quality homes, without adequate space and natural light.

Quality cannot be sacrificed by the urgent need to provide more homes. To do so would be a false economy, leaving us with homes people don’t want to live and don’t want to have in their neighbourhood.

Many new build homes are criticised with having small casement windows in the main living spaces and standard narrow width french doors with little consideration given to the amount of natural light these products offer into the home.

Aluminium sliding door products and windows offer slimmer profiles than their PVCu counterparts and the introduction of larger glazed areas in new build homes would improve the levels of natural light substantially. However all these products cost much more than basic windows and french doors and the cost of these would surely be reflected in property prices.

How is Door Hardware Made?

$
0
0

A door or a window could not function or be secure without door hardware. It is the simple handle, lock or door hinge that enables a door to swing, lock, fold, slide and remain secure.

Door hardware such as Lock and Key

Lock cylinders are one component where there are varying degrees of quality available.

The metal hardware in doors and windows is what makes them functional and secure, and no matter what style of hardware you’re looking for, the type of lock, handle and other metal components will always be a consideration. When it comes to door hardware, strength and durability are vital, and the price of the products will largely be dictated by these two factors.

Forged or die-cast handles?

Some companies specialise in forged door handles where the metal is heated and then pounded into the desired shape, usually by hand. These handles tend to be for doors which require a more ornate finish and are made out of malleable metals such as iron or brass. The majority of door hardware, including handles, are made by die-casting because it’s cheaper than forging. This is because, during the die-casting process, identical parts can be produced en masse. The strength isn’t compromised either as in most cases brass, zinc or aluminium is used for die-cast hardware components. Zinc in particular is a very strong metal with a high impact resistance – something which is important to consider for door locks.

Die-casting door hardware components

A door latch

The locks used in aluminium doors must be of the highest quality to ensure long life and maximum security.

The majority of components which make up the hardware for doors and windows are made by die-casting including housing, handles, locks, gearboxes, keeps and guard plates. To die-cast the parts, zinc ingots are melted at approximately 390⁰C. Die-cast machinery then injects the molten zinc into moulds. Between injections, sprayers coat the empty mould cavities with a release agent so that the components can be easily removed from the moulds. Die-casting machines have an in-built cooling system which hardens the metal. Once hardened and cooled, the excess zinc around each piece and the openings, such as the cylinder for the key, is trimmed.

Locking it up

The most complicated piece of door hardware is the lock, as even the most basic locks contain many different parts which need to be assembled exactly in order for the lock to work. The process of how a lock is made will differ with each type of lock. Many of today’s front and back door locks include multi-point locking systems, which feature at least three locking points which lock simultaneously when they key is turned. As a basic guide, once the die-cast components are prepared, the housing case is lubricated with grease and fitted with a sleeve bearing, which is usually a nylon bearing that allows the handle to turn. After this, the drive tube is inserted and the lever on the other side of the lock is slotted into this. Several other components link the lever to the latch. These will vary depending on the type of lock, for example, electronic locks, such as those used on the main entrances for apartments, will also contain an electronic component such as a circuit board.

Every piece of hardware, from the washers and casing to the bolt and handle, are all made according to a specified design by die-casting and then further machining.

Residential Entrance Doors? What are the choices?

The residential home improvement market is strong in the sales of residential doors, with entrance doors forming the greater part of door sales.  There are a number of products available in entrance doors and consumers have a lot of choice and differences in prices.

A new entrance door is a reasonably cost-effective way to bring an instant transformation to a property and bring it up to date. Whether it is a traditional or modern home, the are a wide variety of doors available to suit, but is there a best product?

PVCu Entrance Doors

pvcu entrance door

A PVCu door is the cheapest available but may not have the aesthetic appeal of other materials.

These are by far the most cost effective replacement doors available on the market. For front doors they will normally be glazed with some kind of decorative panel, for side or rear doors they will normally comprise a mid rail and either glass above and below or a panel below the mid rail. All PVCu doors today comprise at least a five point multi point locking system operated by lever/lever or lever pad handles.

With the diversity of PVCu entrance doors available, no two doors are identical although in situ, they do look very similar.  Much of the aesthetic appeal will be determined by the choice of infill panel in pvcu doors.

Historically, the security aspect of panelled entrance doors has been an issue.  The infill panels used in entrance doors largely comprised two external skins of upvc with a simple foam/polystyrene core.  There were various reports of people gaining entry simply by kicking in the door panel.  Advances in panel design resulted in infill panels comprising a timber of steel core which reinforced the panel in some way, but theoretically, the door panel given enough force and time can still be forced out.

Composite Doors

Composite doors

Composite doors form the majority of what you will see in double glazing showrooms but other options are available.

These by far, dominate the residential entrance door market with varying degrees of quality.  The cheaper end of the composite door market consists of doors with a GRP or glass reinforced plastic core or internal foam core.  The quality end of the market has doors with solid timber cores, marketed for their high security as each core consists of solid wood and therefore much harder to damage and force entry.

There are a wide variety of styles and options on composite doors to suit traditional or modern properties.  Composite doors are normally fabricated with an internal and external decorative skin with glazing being in the form of glazed “cassettes” that bolt onto the door skin.  The fixings on these cassettes can often be visible and of either high or questionable quality, varying from supplier to supplier.

One drawback of composite doors is that the sizes are governed by the sizes of the slabs.  Narrow doors often found in cottages are a problem for many composite door products s as the panels cannot be made small enough to suit the aperture.  Similarly oversize or tall doors are restricted for the same reasons.

There are some reported issues with dark coloured composite doors suffering expansion in hot weather causing locking and latching issues.  Others have reported possible fading when exposed to direct sunlight for long periods.

Timber Doors

natural look of a wood door

Nothing beats the natural look of a wood door and nothing will last as long.

Timber doors are manufactured from high quality wood and are available in both modern and traditional styles.  Often made to order they can be manufactured in unlimited sizes and styles.  They form the high quality end of the market and are renowned for their long service life. One only needs to look at the many original wood doors sill in operation and functioning perfectly after many decades. Some doors still in use today are over 100 years old.

Like any natural material it may need maintenance  but do not be fooled by marketing tactics stating that wood doors are a high maintenance product.  Today’s modern manufacturing and coatings available mean that timber doors are available with long guarantees on performance and their finish.

Timber doors will be at the premium end of the market but they remain a natural and hard wearing product that will look good and perform for many years to come.

Steel Doors

A steel entrance door

A steel entrance door offers the ultimate in quality, thermal performance, long life and high security

Steel doors are not often seen when visiting the mainstream double glazing showrooms.  These types of doors are  amongst the best front doors that you can buy.

The weight, operation and high quality construction of steel doors is often evident as soon as they are seen or opened/closed for the very first time.  There is very high quality construction in steel doors that utilise what is regarded as one of the strongest metals available on the market today.

Steel doors are available in a large range of designs and styles and come with high good thermal insulation, very high security and are guaranteed for long service life for many years to come.

Aluminium Entrance Doors

Aluminium entrance door

Aluminium doors can also be manufactured to replicate any style whether modern or traditional

Aluminium Doors are available as either fully glazed, with horizontal and vertical rails and like pvc or steel doors are available with a wide range of decorative infill panels to achieve either a traditional, modern or contemporary design.

Aluminium entrance doors when first designed have integration with other windows and doors built in. This means that they can be coupled to other windows easily creating multiple assemblies and can also be coupled to sliding doors if required.

The majority of door types available come with several options depending upon the application. Some examples are:

  • Wide choice of colours
  • Low threshold options for disabled access
  • Dual colour meaning different colours inside and out
  • A wide variety of hardware such as lever handles, pull handles, decorative or antique hardware
  • Electric locks and swipe card entry

There are very few showrooms that can demonstrate an entire range of entrance doors in all materials.

If you have already visited some double glazing showrooms, you may have noticed only one or two types of doors available such as composite doors and PVCu doors.  Often double glazing companies will put in their showroom what sells best for them and if you have a property that may suit a steel or timber door better you may not have the opportunity to view it.

It makes sense to shop around, search online and see what is best for your particular home and property.  Just because a showroom only shows you a composite door for example, this does not mean this is all you can have!

Some products such as steel doors and timber doors are to be found in dedicated specialist showrooms so please do your research and find the right door for your property not simply what your local double glazing company wishes to sell you.

By viewing and trying out the wide range of doors available, you will be able to make the best and most informed choice for your home.

New Curtain Walling By SAPA Building Systems.

SAPA Building Systems have launched a new curtain walling system, further expanding the range of SAPA, a major European and Global supplier of windows, doors, curtain walling and aluminium systems.

Powder coated curtain walling

Curtain Walling will soon be subject to more stringent building regulations and larger, triple glazed units.

SAPA is already well known for it’s range of aluminium curtain walling systems.  They have been specified in schools, developments of flats and houses and other commercial buildings for many years already.

Sustainability is at the core of the new SAPA NRGY762 Curtain Walling System

NRGY62  from SAPA is the first product in their new NRGY portfolio of products.  Designed around offering the highest levels of thermal performance, it is a curtain walling and facade system aimed at the architecturally designed and influenced buildings and projects.

Most curtain walling systems are designed around a typical 50mm width and sight line.  SAPA already offer a 52mm and 72mm option but this new curtain walling product uses a typical 62mm width.  This not only helps the system keep in line with their other products it adds to the range for those that are looking for a dimension in between.

The other benefit of the 62mm width is greater live loading.

This new face width of 62mm provides an increased live load movement. It also continues to meet the requirements of BS6180 standard for recommendations and guidance for the construction of barriers in and around buildings.  BS6180 calls for a 15mm minimum required within the system to act as a barrier instead of a handrail (when combined with the glass). This is maintained with this new curtain walling system.

SAPA say:

This is a point of difference to other 60mm curtain walling systems which, when you take into account manufacturing tolerances, often only leave a 3mm gap between the glass and the frame, giving very little room for manoeuvre under building load before the glass comes into contact with the frame.

Construction methods in the new SAPA NRGY62 curtain walling have also been improved.

Smart Pin construction of SAPA NRGY62 Curtain Walling

The new Smart Pin construction of SAPA NRGY62 Curtain Walling

This new curtain walling system from SAPA also moves away from the traditional “bracket” construction in assembling transoms to the mullions.  It utilises a unique smart pin system.

The advantage of the smart pins system is the ability to support greater glass weights.  Designs in curtain walling are moving to larger panes of glass than before.  This is also beneficial in meeting the current trend for triple glazing.  As triple glazing is a much heavier sealed unit than traditional double glazed units, greater weights of up to 680kg can be accommodated.

This is a sizeable upshift in glass weights that curtain walling sections can carry and is a significant improvement over other systems. SAPA believe that these smart pin connections are set to become the standard given the changing trends in glass specification.

The NRGY62 system has excellent thermal and environmental specifications, meeting Passivhaus requirements.  This positions SAPA ahead of any future changes in Building Regulations that will no doubt demand greater performance from door and window systems.

New Steel Replacement Window Suite from Smart Systems.

There are now several systems companies offering aluminium window products that are designed to replicate original steel windows.

The Smarts Heritage 47 window would be ideal as a window replacement here.

The Smarts Heritage 47 window would be ideal as a window replacement here.

Many people have made the mistake of spoiling the aesthetics of older buildings fitted with original steel windows by replacing them with PVCu.  Often these plastic windows will be fitted with internal Georgian bars in an effort to replicate the square  small pane effect of the original.

Even where aluminium windows have been fitted and whether the Georgian bars like on the plastic window are internal or face applied they may not accurately replicate the aesthetics of the original.

In some properties this may not matter, however in heritage and traditional looking buildings it is important if you want to keep the original aesthetics.

Smart Systems Alitherm Heritage 47 is the latest introduction into the market offering solutions for the replacement of old Crittall Windows.

The new Alitherm 47 System is actually an excellent window. The sight lines of this new, slim and thermally efficient window really do replicate the visuals of original windows.

There are slim frame and sash sections as well as design features built into the system to mimic the look of the originals.  Aesthetics are very much like for like on the Alitherm Heritage 47 System.

There are several applications where this new aluminium crittall replacement window can be used.

Old cottages, warehouses being converted into apartments, conservation areas and art deco homes are excellent examples where this kind of window could be used to provide a modern window replacement with all the original features.  Cleverly there are also pivot windows available as well as side hung casements.

The replacement of old steel doors was often an issue as there was little available in aluminium to replicate the sight lines.  Some companies have taken window profiles and modified them to create doors.  Smart Systems also have actual door profiles available to complement this system. The door suite available is aesthetically very good indeed and provides an aluminium solution for balcony doors, rear french doors and side doors.  Read more about Crittall door replacements in aluminium.

The new steel window replacement system from Smarts is also available in their large colour range including the very attractive Sensations range of textured powder coated aluminium.  It is also available in the brand new Alchemy range of anodised effect powder coated colours.

Windows feature excellent security through multi point locking, impressive 1.2 or 1.5 Wm2K U values, 24-32mm double glazed unit options and A rating.

They are further complemented with a range of traditional hardware such as monkey tail handles, bulb type handles and traditional looking peg stays typical on original steel windows.

Installers of these windows should check the suitability of “standard” double glazed units.

An example where a typical double glazed unit stands proud

An example where a typical double glazed unit at the top of the window stands proud of the aluminium and glazing bead line.

These really are attractive and authentic looking windows.  However it is the experience of this website in working with these slim steel replacement windows that often the standard spacer bar height of typical double glazed units may stand proud of the bead/aluminium line.

It should be made clear that many customers may not notice this.  However there have been a number of cases where customers have complained that they can see the silver, black or white spacer bars proud of the aluminium line.

Glass manufacturers are not to blame as their units fall within manufacturing tolerances and industry standards.  It is worth checking with your manufacturer or supplier.  We recommend sourcing double glazed units from manufacturers that specialise in slim bar double glazed units such as Trefforest Glass and others where this potential problem can be avoided.

The Monarch Aluminium Monaframe window is now discontinued but there is an alternative.

The Monarch Windows or Monaframe Windows as they were mainly called, were designed as a direct fix window to remove the need for hardwood subframes that earlier aluminium windows needed.  They were also available in wood fix options where customers wanted to retain the existing subframes but needed new aluminium windows.  Over the years they were also enhanced with improved locking systems known as the Monalok.

Instantly recognisable and technically superior in their day, Monaframe Windows were the leading aluminium windows of their time.  Complemented by Monaframe entrance doors and sliding patio doors, these high quality and brilliantly designed windows and doors continue to perform faultlessly to this day.

With Monarch Monaframe windows and doors being massively popular as an aluminium window, people are still searching for Monaframe Windows. Some are looking at installing matching windows in their new extensions.  Others are simply wishing to now complete the remainder of their house with the same windows.  Other people may be seeking replacement parts for their original Monarch Windows such as locking systems or handles.

Monarch Aluminium Monaframe Windows were discontinued in 2010 and replaced by the SAPA Crown System.

The new SAPA Crown window is aesthetically similar to Monaframe but also comes with some beautiful enhancements such as this profiled transom

The original Monaframe Windows utilised old thermal break technology and could no longer meet the Building Regulation changes that came into effect in 2010.  The Monframe window had to be replaced to meet these regulations.

SAPA Building Systems introduced the Crown Window and Door System as it’s replacement.

This is aesthetically very similar to the old Monarch Aluminium windows (but not identical) retains many of the features of the original Monaframe windows such as the profiled outer frame internally and similar sash dimensions.  Locking systems and handles have been replaced with the latest technology and design.

So what do you do if you require new windows to replace or add to old Monarch Aluminium Windows?

Contact this website and we will put you in touch with reputable manufacturers and installers of the Crown Window system.  Unfortunately if you have Monarch windows with failed locking systems or handles or if any window parts such as beads are required, these are no longer available but you may be able to find similar parts that may work within the windows from specialist window components suppliers such as Duffells.

Who Makes The Best Bi Folding Doors ?

It is well known that Bi folding doors are available in Aluminium, PVCu and Timber. There is also the choice of hybrid materials which consist of aluminium on the outside and natural wood inside. For the purposes of this article we will concentrate on the choice of aluminium bi folding doors, and try to offer some guidance.

One question often asked to this website is “where can I view examples of bi folding doors in one place?”  There are some good reasons why this is not always possible.  One main reason is space!  Unlike the window samples a double glazing salesperson may bring into the home, bi folding doors must be full size working and correctly installed doors to give the right customer experience of the product. To display many different systems typically 4 metres wide would need very large showrooms.

Another reason is home improvement companies choose which system they will sell to the consumer in the same way that other retail shops choose which brand of product to stock.

Most home improvement firms offer windows, entrance doors, conservatories and bifolding doors.  Other firms choose to specialise only in bifolding doors.  You are generally more likely to see a greater variety of bifolding door systems at a bifolding door specialist than a company specialising in many other window and door products.

The bifolding door is the most popular home improvement product.

But is there a best bi folding door system?

All bifolding doors come with their own features. There is no "best" product, but rather the door that best suits your needs.

All bifolding doors come with their own features. There is no “best” product, but rather the door that best suits your needs.

The bifolding door has progressed significantly since the older versions of sliding folding doors. These consisted of non insulated profiles, simple locking mechanisms, handles and running gear. All the modern bifolding doors available from the major companies today offer good security, high thermal insulation and much improved hardware and running gear. Some come with long guarantees on paint quality and on the product itself.

Every bifolding door has benefits to a consumer based upon cost, aesthetics of the product, the supply chain, customer care and so forth.

So what is the best bifolding door?  The first thing to explain is the role of the bifolding door in the overall supply chain.

There are bifolding doors where aluminium door profiles, hardware and accessories are supplied by the systems company to a network of nationwide manufacturers to product.  There are also bifolding doors which are manufactured uniquely by the systems company. Learn about Systems Companies.

The Bifolding door “system”

There are many bifolding doors available in the marketplace designed, extruded in raw material form and supplied to nationwide bifolding door manufacturers by the Systems Companies. These are called bifolding door systems. Take a look at our Aluminium Systems Companies Directory to see who offers bifolding doors.

In general terms these Systems Companies supply the aluminium bars, hardware and accessories to nationwide manufacturers. Many of these manufacturers will sell the fabricated bifolding doors to the installers, home improvement firms, general builders and companies specialising in home renovations.  Some manufacturers will even make and install your bifolding doors.

Some home improvement companies may also rebrand these bifolding doors in a different name. They remain for example a “Smarts System” (or Smarts Door) but a simple marketing exercise of re-branding the door gives that company its own particular “brand” of bifolding door. Generally the door is exactly the same as any other of the same system.  Some companies may also choose to fit different handles to differentiate their door from another.

As a further example, the new Discover Air bifolding door that was recently launched by Everglade Windows is in fact a rebranded Reynaers System. It remains the same very high quality Reynaers System door, but under a different name.

There is no disadvantage to the end user of doors being supplied in this way through a network of manufacturers who install or supply the installers.

Indeed this is the norm in the way the vast majority of bifolding doors are supplied. The systems companies provide detailed fabrication manuals, technical support documents, tooling and machinery to their network of manufacturers.

All reputable bifolding door manufacturers will adhere to these technical manuals to ensure the product is manufactured, glazed and installed as the systems company intended.  This is important in the event of a problem with the finished product.  The Systems Company will only stand by it if it has been manufactured and installed in accordance with it’s technical manuals and fitted with approved hardware and accessories.

The only consideration here is as these doors in raw material form are supplied to a variety of manufacturers the quality of manufacture may differ from company to company as will the guarantees.

Some Bifolding doors are only manufactured by one company.

By comparison, there are some companies that offer bifolding doors unique to them. They retain their own bifolding door “system” but also manufacture the doors themselves.  These are then be supplied ready-made to their approved dealers and installers. Such companies include Origin Bifolding Doors, Kloeber, Sunfold, Sunflex, Centor, New Wave Doors, and Folding Sliding Door Company.

Modern bifolding doors today will meet high standards of security, energy efficiency and can be installed in normal and demanding environments.

Your new bifolding door will either be made by a network of manufacturers to set standards or manufactured only by one company.

Taking Origin Bifolding Doors (currently the largest bifolding door company in the UK) as one example of these system and manufacturing companies, the advantage to these doors is that only Origin manufacture their own doors and nobody else.

These doors are designed, engineered and manufactured from the ground up by one company. This to them ensures a consistent quality of the build. Doors manufactured in this way also result in complete control of the quality of manufacture and the ongoing service levels. Manufacturing guarantees are also likely to be longer or more consistent as they are provided by one manufacturer.

Therefore if who has made your bifolding doors is important, you may wish to do your research and ask each potential supplier for a full background.

With the bifolding door continuing its upward trend as the leading home improvement product, the inevitable question is which is the best bifolding door? There is no absolute best product, but there are several considerations.

All bifolding doors come with their own features. There is no “best” product, but rather the door that best suits your needs. Having considered the supply chain we now examine the technical, aesthetic and other features common in bifolding doors.

The Bifolding Door Brands

There is no “best bifolding door” but the leading systems can be grouped together for comparison.  This list is to help you compare the various systems should you wish to do so. It is compiled with our experience of having worked with many bifolding door products, the companies and their customer base.

The following Bifolding Door brands are considered by many to be the market leaders in terms of design, build quality and service levels. Obviously this is reflected in the pricing.

Ultimately the best bifolding door will be the bifolding door that matches your budget, the requirement of your particular project and what you like.

In deciding what is the best bifolding door for you, here are other considerations that will be determined by your particular project, budget and design requirements. Below we list some things you may wish to consider in helping you to make the right choice.

Aesthetics

The aesthetics of bifolding doors will vary from system to system. It is advisable to consider whether you want a door with profiled or rounded edges to the frame and door leaves, or a more flatline and contemporary appearance. Bifolding door aesthetics vary greatly. Do your research, shop around and find the bifolding door that will best match your home.

If for example you are having a grey or other powder coated door, you may prefer the more flat appearance of some systems. A wood effect aluminium bifolding door may lend itself better to the rounded profiles.

Maximum and minimum sizes of doors

Bifolding door systems vary in what minimum and maximum door leaf sizes are available as well as what the is maximum overall height the doors can be made to. Some bifolding door systems are restricted to maximum height of 2500mm up to 2700mm. Other door systems can be made in maximum heights of 3 metres.

Therefore, if you have a particular requirements, make sure you seek advice. If your local bifolding door suppliers offers a system that cannot be made particularly tall, this does not mean it cannot be done by another bifolding door system.

Quality of the Running gear and hardware.

The running gear is one of the most important components in a bifolding door. It is widely regarded that doors which have all the weight on the bottom are more reliable than those bifolding doors that “hang” from the top. A bifolding door is a complex product and reliability is essential. We recommend you source doors utilising high quality running hear taking the weight on the bottom with running guides at the top.

Some bifolding door manufacturers use proprietary running gear. Other companies have developed their own running mechanisms that are completely unique to their doors.

The same applies to door handles and hinges. There is diversity in the quality and some bifolding door manufactures differentiate themselves with the high quality construction, design and feel of their door handles. The door handle, the intermediate pull handles between the doors remain visible at all times, therefore you have to be happy with how the handles will look.

Other bifolding door manufacturers offer pull handles that are more concealed than others or recess completely. SAPA offer a bifolding door with a continuous full height hinge. Origin doors offer finger safe gaskets that can colour match the rest of the door. Schuco offer large distinctive door hardware that is instantly recognisable. There are differences between all systems, so again shop around.

The bifolding door low threshold

The threshold on bifolding doors will be a key consideration as most people want as flush as possible a threshold. The link between the inner floor and the outside paving slabs of decking will be required to be as smooth as possible using the lowest possible threshold.

The dimension of the low threshold will vary by millimetres from system to system.  Find out more about Thresholds on Bifolding Doors.

Service Levels

You may find differing service levels and customer care from company to company.  All reputable and experienced bifolding door manufacturers who are supplied door material by the systems company will offer a good manufacturing guarantee to their installers.  The installer will then offer his own guarantee (typically 10 years) and may also then choose to offer bolt on customer service packages.   All of these guarantees will largely depend upon the door being manufactured and installed correctly in order to be honoured.

Again, there is no disadvantage to the consumer in doors being supplied and guaranteed in this way through the overall supply chain involving more than one party.

By comparison, the systems companies that manufacture their own doors rely only upon themselves to ensure the door is properly made and their dealers to ensure it is properly installed.  This enables some to offer far longer guarantees.  Origin Doors have a 20 year guarantee that no other bifolding door company offers.  This does not imply that a door with 10 years will be any less reliable.  It simply means such companies who make their own doors have greater control of all their processes internally as less parties are involved.

These companies also have the perceived advantage through their various registration schemes, product serial numbers and processes of knowing exactly where they have sold their doors.   This greater control enables these companies to offer more bespoke customer care packages and benefits that are then passed onto the end user via their dealers.

Bifolding door Quality & Standards

All bifolding door manufacturers operate within strict guidelines for material quality, glass specification and security standards. Other companies will have their own in house Quality Assurance Systems and procedures to ensure product and manufacturing quality is consistent and of a high standard.  Generally you can be confident that the various elements of a modern bifolding door generally meet recognised industry standards for conformity and type.

U Values

A U value is the name given to how heat transfer is measured though a building material such as a door or a window.  In simple terms it is a measure proving how how energy efficient a door will be including its glass.  This is to comply with new Building Regulations that came into effect in October 2010.

All parts whether windows, doors or building materials that contribute to the overall energy efficiency of a home must achieve a  U Value.  Generally, the lower the U Value, the more energy efficient the product.  The current Building Regulations require the overall door energy rating to have a U value of less than 1.8wM2K. On bifolding doors U Values will vary from system to system but each must meet the minimum standard as determined by the Building Regulations product to product as well but each should meet the minimal standard.

Powder Coating

Any manufacturer is expected to ensure that the polyester powder coated finish typical of aluminium bifolding doors will be carried out within recognised industry standards such as BS6496  - the British Standard for polyester powder coating.

Salt and Chlorine

If your doors are to be installed in a coastal or swimming pool environment, it is very important that the powder coating applied takes into consideration the location. Any bifolding door system can therefore be specified with an extended paint guarantee. This guarantee will protect powder coated bifolding doors against salt, chlorine and other contaminants.

Security

Locking mechanisms will largely meet minimum or maximum security requirements depending upon what testing standard has been carried out. Some bifolding doors meet Secured by Design accreditation, others do not.  It is advisable to ask what Security Standard the bifolding door has been tested to.

Weather

Weather performance on bifolding doors will also have been carried out to established industry standards. Whilst some doors will have a more severe weather rating than others, this does not imply that the bifolding doors with the lesser standard will leak!  You may wish to consider a door with a higher weather rating if the bifolding doors are to be installed in a very exposed location. If your doors are simply for an extension to a typical terraced house the lesser standard would suffice for many.

Summary

This article aims to help you understand the various features of aluminium bifolding doors and what to consider. We have given some background about the different parts of the supply chain. And how the guarantees work, along with some general questions relating to bifolding doors.  So hopefully you have enough information to ask the right questions, and fully understand the answers.

A reputable and experienced home improvement company will be able to fully advise you about installation issues, guarantees for your bifolding doors. Whether they are a company that buys in ready-made doors from a manufacturer or whether they are an approved dealer, or even both, they should be able to demonstrate in depth product knowledge.  However, it is up to you to be happy and confident with your chosen supplier.

If you are interested in doing the work yourself in comparing the many bifolding doors available before making a decision, we recommend you contact the systems companies directly and ask them for a local manufacturer or installer of their products in your area.
