With so many manufacturers and systems companies why can't the G Awards embrace the wider industry?

With so many manufacturers and systems companies why can’t the G Awards embrace the wider industry?

The Annual Glass and Glazing or G13 awards were held last night 29th November and the winners are listed below. Congratulations to all that took part, were finalists and the winners.

There are several comments every year following these awards as to why there continues to be a general lack of involvement from the aluminium systems companies or indeed any new names.  For those that follow the awards year on year, it is easy to spot the regular names that participate every year.

It is no surprise that the companies active in their marketing are the ones taking part.

One only needs to analyse the industry magazines, the social media sites and other forms of media to see the regular names that get themselves out there in the industry and heavily promote themselves.  With tens of thousands of companies active in the sector why don’t more people other than what many regard to be the “same old names” take part?  The reality could be that with nearly 14000 businesses in the sector, perhaps these thousands of window companies are active, busy, involved in running their businesses and simply don’t consider getting their name out to the wider industry that important to them? The other point of view is that these awards year on year fail to capture the entire fenestration sector relying upon the participation of the trusted few.

Every year the comments come in saying these awards are “inclusive” or “insular”.  It would be great for the wider industry to know on what basis the finalists and indeed the winners are chosen but we mustn’t take away from the winners what it means to win and there is obviously a lot of work that goes into preparing your submission to the organisers.

It is simply a shame these awards cannot involve the wider industry, be more transparent, encourage other market sectors and offer a wider scope of awards.

One only needs to look at how the FiT Show captured so much of the fenestration sector and one wonders why the organisers of the G Awards don’t embrace a marketing strategy to truly capture the industry? You cannot blame the sceptics for thinking that it is year after year the same names. One only needs to look at how many new companies chose to exhibit this year at the FiT Show because good marketing captured them.  The G Awards clearly don’t do this.

Or is it simply a case “don’t complain if you’ve not taken part”?

The National Fenestration Awards, whilst not having anywhere near the exposure or the budget or the contacts nonetheless just looking at who made the shortlists has at least managed to capture a wider audience and the categories at least are more imaginative and current.  For those that actually know some of the names below it is not all big names. So is the old adage of don’t complain if you’re not taking part actually true? Whatever the point of view an award in whatever form does obviously have benefit to the perception by others of any business.

Here are the list of winners from the G Awards.  Well done again to all.

What do you think?

Are these awards insular, old boys network and even relevant? Or is it a simple case of if you don’t take part, don’t complain? Would you like to see how the G13 awards judges arrived at their decisions on finalists and winners? Leave a comment below. Be good to hear your views.
