One Angel Square in Manchester, aside from being the headquarters of the Cooperative Group is now a multi award winning building, with some mighty credentials the most recent being winning Project of the Year at the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyor Awards 2013.

SAPA Building Systems Elegance curtain walling is installed in One Angel Square in a rare double skin configuration
There is much to be said about One Angel Square which is an integral part of the NOMA development in Manchester. Arguably one of the most striking and aesthetically challenging buildings of recent times the glazing element formed a crucial part of it’s impressive sustainability and other credentials.
The £100m building, sold on leaseback to the Co-operative for over £140 million is one of the largest sustainable buildings in Europe.
The curtain walling element to this building was manufactured and installed by Waagner Biro one of the leading companies responsible for glazing works to landmark buildings the world over. They have carried out glazing works to Olympic Stadia, The Reichstag building in Germany, The Great Court at the British Museum, Vienna State Opera House, The “Blob” in Eindhoven and Capital Gate in Abu Dhabi to name just a few.
The impressive double skin facade is similar to what has been used in the Shard is two glass facades that utilise the space between the inner and outer to help get the most out of solar gain.
SAPA are right to be proud of their involvement in this building constructed by BAM Construction and with involvement from Buro Happold and 3D Reid. The building is owned by Deutche Bank and Gingko Invesments.
The curtain walling installed is SAPA Elegance 72 Unitised System.
The unitised system is the best for this kind of application where the curtain walling is assembled and glazed in the workshop, delivered to site and then lifted to the desired floor and mounted on purpose made brackets. The advantage of unitised systems is that there is no site delay due to bad weather conditions and makes for much more efficient manufacturing and installation. It enables floor by floor construction and unitised curtain walling lends itself brilliantly to the most impressive facades in modern buildings.
SAPA curtain walling was also used on the nine storey high atrium in the building and the glass roof – all helping with the eco credentials of this vast commercial building.
Bronze anodised is rare to see nowadays but here the curtain walling was all anodised instead of powder coated.

This impressive building is energy plus, meaning it produces surplus energy
One Angel Square has achieved a world record BREEAM score of 95.32% with “outstanding” classification making it one of the most sustainable large building globally. Furthermore it is powered by a biodiesel cogeneration plant using rapeseed oil in the provision of heat and power. As well as this there is grey water recycling, harvesting of natural rainwater. The energy saving credentials of this building continue in its ability to be an energy plus building producing surplus energy instead of using it and zero carbon emissions as well.
The building has also achieved a world record
This kind of project again demonstrates the versatility and credentials of aluminium as the most suitable product in fenestration not just commercially but residentially too.
