The commercial door has been around for over 30 years now and has long established itself as the most reliable entrance doors in the marketplace where a high traffic, low threshold door is required.

Commercial doors have remained largely unchanged since their introduction over 30 years ago.
Commercial aluminium doors are also one of the most versatile doors you can buy. Not only can they swing in and out (unlike domestic doors to dwellings) but they also come with the widest possible range of hardware, from a simple hook lock to life saving panic bars and exit devices and high security access control and monitoring systems.
The Commercial Door has proved itself over time to be one of the most secure doors you can buy.
Traditionally fitted with a single point hook lock, commercial doors have actually proven over time to be one of the most secure doors you can buy. Where the residential market promotes high security to domestic doors with with 8 point locks, levers, latches and hook bolts, commercial doors have remained secure over time with much less.
Consider that commercial doors secure buildings with arguably much more at stake than a home. Buildings with hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of stock, machinery equipment and so forth will often have a basic commercial door keeping it secure.
So is the recent trend towards a higher security commercial door necessary?
Beaufort Systems, now AluK introduced their high security door last year, Metal Technology went one further with a high security double door set with panic bars and now Ikon Aluminium Systems have introduced their PAS 24 Commercial door.
PAS 24 is one of the key standards required by Secured by Design and the Association of Police Officers as the minimum police requirement for secured by design premises.
Commercial doors are normally fitted to high traffic buildings such as schools as well as shops, offices and other such high use buildings. All of these buildings are enhanced with quite sophisticated security systems and often linked to the monitored locks or alarm sensors on commercial doors. So is an even higher security commercial door necessary?
Ultimately it will depend on the application and that particular building. Architects who are working on a Secured By Design development may will be interested in this product as will building users who require the ultimate in security on their commercial door. However we must remember how many doors are still functioning and keeping buildings security with the minimum of locking.
We should also remember that the commercial aluminium door is one product that has had very little development since it’s introduction over 30 years ago. Even in America where it is believed the commercial door originated, these are still largely non thermal with basic concealed closers and single point hook locks.
In recent years we have seen thermally broken doors, doors with anti finger trap hinge stiles, deeper rail and stile options and dual colour capability, but they have not had the advancement that residential doors have had.
