Anyone designing a property extension will know that many decisions are based on design compromises, usually working around space limitation or regulatory requirements.  Bifolding doors are the No.1 product installed in home extension work, and now you can explore the added advantages of corner bi fold doors to add something extra to your project. The open corner arrangement gives a completely new dimension to bifolding doors and is well worth considering.

What are open corner bifold doors?

Whilst the concept of bifolding doors on a corner is not new, traditionally there has been a structural corner post that is static.  When the doors are slid back on each side, you will often see the corner post remain in position.  But what if you want a completely open corner?

Origin doors have for many years been supplying their bifolding doors with the open corner arrangement.  Their clever design on bifolding doors means that you can create a full opening round a corner with no static corner post and give a completely different view from normal. The system works by connecting the corner post to one side of the corner.  The main set of doors will slide back as normal.  You then unlock using the locking flush bolt arrangement the corner post and the set of doors on the return.  All doors are now opened and including the corner post which has moved with the set of doors it is connected to. The construction of your extension will require a cantilevered arrangement on the roof to provide the necessary structural support to the building.  This need not be complicated.  With the right advice from your architect, builder or structural engineer, this is easily designed and constructed.

Corner bifolding doors are available in many configurations.

You can have a flexible open corner that can consist from two to six or more leaves on the one side and one or two or more on the other; depending on the size of the structural opening and what is being constructed.  The doors will all have matching hardware and hinges. What you will notice is a very smooth unlocking of the corner post and the doors but one that is also highly secure.

In the closed position the sight line of the corner post is only 82mm which does not add significant bulk to the aluminium door and frame profiles when the doors are closed. The moving corner post on bifolding doors is not available with every system as it is with Origin Doors. Many of the other mainstream systems are unable to offer this flexible arrangements.
